Naturgy to invest 43 million euros in the construction of the Pastoriza-Rodeiro wind farm in the province of Lugo

  • This renewables project, part of the recent government auction, is in addition to the construction of the wind farms on the Costa da Morte: Peña Forcada-Catasol II in Laxe, Monte Tourado-Eixe in Vimianzo and Mouriños in Cabana de Bergantiños and Zas.
  • The 14 wind turbines at Pastoriza-Rodeiro will produce enough electricity to power 60,000 homes.
  • Naturgy, which has reaffirmed its commitment to renewable energy in Galicia, forecasts an investment of around 200 million euros to produce around 200 megawatts between 2018 and 2019

Naturgy has commenced construction work on the Pastoriza-Rodeiro wind farm, which will be located in the town of A Pastoriza in Lugo province. The project will have a total of 14 wind turbines with a total power of 48.5 MW, which will mean an investment of around 43 million euros.

The work started until now includes the redesign of the construction area, signposting, assembling auxiliary installations, clearing and preparing the access roads and establishing relevant preventative measures for archaeological and environmental monitoring aimed to avoid any potential damage to heritage or natural elements.

Both the clearing work and the removal of weeds from the surface are strictly necessary to minimise the effect on the surroundings.

By developing this project, which is linked to the construction of the Peña Forcada-Catasol II wind farm in Laxe, the Monte Tourado-Eixe wind farm in Vimianzo and Mouriños wind farm in Cabana de Bergantiños and Zas –all part of the latest government auction for new renewable power in May 2017– Naturgy confirms its commitment to Galicia and to the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan.

14 wind turbines will produce enough electricity to power some 60,000 homes

The Pastoriza-Rodeiro wind power project will have fourteen 3.46 MW unit capacity wind turbines, with a hub height of 84 metres and a rotor diameter of 132 metres. The turbines will have a total power of 48.5 MW and an estimated annual production of 150 GWh, the equivalent electric consumption of 60,000 homes.

“The Pastoriza-Rodeiro wind farm will be installed in a rural area in the province of Lugo, providing the land with a new use while remaining perfectly compatible with the agriculture and livestock and creating new jobs. The renewables project will enable a more efficient and rational use of the primary energy, which will reduce the emission of pollutant gases and preserve the quality of the environment,” stressed Mará Landeira, head of the development of wind power projects in Galicia at Naturgy. The construction of the Pastoriza-Rodeiro wind farm will generate around 340 jobs in its various stages. For the construction, operation and maintenance of the farm, Naturgy’s technical team will receive significant support from different companies with offices and staff in Galicia.

Environmental and archaeological monitoring will be continuously carried out during the construction to guarantee compliance with the measures outlined in the Environmental Impact Statement regarding vegetation, fauna, atmosphere, hydrology and cultural and archaeological elements. The affected areas will be revegetated, and periodic environmental monitoring will be performed throughout the life of the farm.

Commitment from Naturgy to renewable energies in Galicia

Naturgy has an installed wind power of 304.6 MW in Galicia, with 13 wind farms in operation and an annual production of 581 GWh in 2017. The energy company put the Cordal de Montouto wind farm in operation in 2015 and in 2016 performed the first repowering in Galicia of the Cabo Vilano wind farm, replacing 22 wind turbines with 2 and increasing production by 400%.

The energy company, which has reaffirmed its commitment to renewable energy in Galicia, forecasts an investment of around 200 million euros to produce about 200 megawatts between 2018 and 2019.
