Earlier today, the director of the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC), Abel Guarinos, the Head of Programming for the Valencia Summer Film Festival, José Antonio Hurtado, the Assistant Audiovisual and Cinematography Director of IVC, José Luis Moreno, and the General Manager of NEDGIA Cegas, Celestina López presented the line-up for the 19th Valencia Summer Film Festival, which will take place in the Palau de la Música gardens from 28 July to 26 August. NEDGIA Cegas is sponsoring this cultural initiative for the ninth year in a row as part of its commitment to cultural and social development in the Region of Valencia, where the company has been providing its services for over 170 years.
The 19th Valencia Summer Film Festival combines open-air culture and recreation to present a wide range of films in the iconic Jardines del Turia, opposite the Palau de la Música. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film festival, a selection of great classics from the history of cinema will be screened. For the first time, two films will also be shown in their original language with subtitles in Valencian: “La librería” (2017) by Isabel Coixet and “M. Una ciutat cerca un assassí” (1931) by Fritz Lang.
Line-up for the 2018 Valencia Summer Film Festival
The 19th Valencia Summer Film Festival will screen a total of 11 films at 26 sessions to be held from Monday to Sunday (not Wednesdays). The festival has selected the great black and white classic “Casablanca” (1942) by Michael Curtiz for the opening session.
As was the case in previous years, the Valencia Summer Film Festival will include two separate themes: “Cinema of Today” and “Classic Cinema”. The “Cinema of Today” category includes some of the films recognised at the Goya Awards, the Oscars and the European Film Awards, such as: “A Fantastic Woman” (Sebastán Lelio, 2017); “Lots of Kids, a Monkey and a Castle” (Gustavo Salmerón, 2017); “The Square” (Ruben Östlund, 2017) and “The Shape of Water” (Guillermo del Toro, 2017).
The “Classic Cinema” category includes some great classics of the silver screen in excellent digital versions that allow these films to be enjoyed on the big screen in all their glory. The classics chosen for this year include: “Casablanca” (Michael Curtiz, 1942); “Sunset Boulevard” (Billy Wilder, 1950); “Rebecca” (Alfred Hitchcock, 1940) and a double feature of silent films starring Buster Keaton: “The Goat” and “The Navigator”.
