Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables to invest 165 million euros in building 250 MW of photovoltaic power in Spain

  • The renewables subsidiary of GAS NATURAL FENOSA has nominated a total of nine photovoltaic power plants associated with the 250 MW of power awarded in the auction carried out by the Government in July.
  • The projects finally making up the awarded power – located in the autonomous regions of Castile-La Mancha and Extremadura – will have solar resources in excess of 1,900 hours of production per year.

According to the procedure established by the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda (MINETAD), the successful bidders are required to nominate the projects they could build associated with the power awarded at the renewables auction in July 2017 during April, with this nomination allowed to identify projects accounting for power up to 50% greater than the figure awarded.

Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables has formalised the nomination of nine photovoltaic power plants, with a total installed power of over 340 MW (compared to the 250 MW awarded) and located in four provinces of two autonomous regions: Castile-La Mancha and Extremadura.

Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables recently announced the launch of construction on the La Nava project (49 MW) in the province of Ciudad Real and, in the coming months, will steadily confirm the execution of those plants that – among the other projects identified – will finally make up the 250 MW awarded. In any case, they will have solar resources in excess of 1,900 hours of production per year. The company estimates that developing these projects will require a total investment of around 165 million euros.

Specifically, Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables has nominated the projects of Canredondo, Carpio de Tajo, La Nava, Picón I, Picón II, Picón III and Zorita in Castile-La Mancha, with a total installed power of 271.7 MW; and the projects of Las Jaras de Badajoz and Miraflores in Extremadura, with a total installed power of 70 MW.

The result of the auctions in May and July 2017 was a success for the renewables subsidiary of GAS NATURAL FENOSA given that it positioned itself ahead of the other utility companies operating in the Spanish energy sector.

The Director of Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables, Ana Peris, stated that “these auctions allow projects on which the energy group has been working in recent years to become a reality, creating a truly competitive and optimised portfolio”.

The portfolio of Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables projects is far along in its administrative procedures, allowing for early compliance with the various milestones set by the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda (MINETAD) for the power awarded.

Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables, a company forming part of GAS NATURAL FENOSA, closed 2017 with a consolidated total installed capacity in operation of 1,147 MW (979 MW from wind, 110 MW from mini-hydroelectric plants and 58 MW from cogeneration and photovoltaics).
