On 22 October, Naturgy and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) agreed to extend the contract for the long-term supply of LNG to Puerto Rico. The contract will now be in force until 2032. It covers an annual volume of 2 bcm and could reach 3 bcm depending on the country's needs, and the price will be completely indexed to the Henry Hub (the principal US gas index). This gas will guarantee the supply of power generation plants in Puerto Rico. The contract to supply LNG to PREPA was set to expire in October 2020. It had an annual volume of 1.5 bcm and the price indexation was linked to oil (50%) and the Henry Hub (50%).

Naturgy has made significant progress in complying with its financial and operational commitments as well as regarding ESG matters. In the first nine months of the year the company has faced with the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, the resulting health and economic crisis and an adverse energy situation with a sharp drop in the price of raw materials. Right from the start of the crisis, the company has played a leading role by adopting measures to support and protect the interests of all its stakeholders in order to reduce the impact of the pandemic on domestic economies and to contribute to the management of this health crisis.

The agreement reached demonstrates Sonatrach’s and Naturgy’s willingness to consolidate their long-term partnerships started decades ago.

A report by Frontier Economics and the German University of Aachen concludes that integrated infrastructure management (sector coupling) will be essential in achieving decarbonisation, because it minimises costs, makes it possible to decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify, increases supply safety, and makes it possible to promote an industry with export potential and job creation.
