Naturgy is awarded the largest wind power project in the Canary Islands: the Puerto del Rosario wind farm in Fuerteventura

  • The Puerto del Rosario Wind Farm, in which €39.3 million will be invested, will have an installed capacity of over 29 MW and is part of the new wind-power auction of 217 MW held by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition.
  • The project is in addition to the eight wind farms that the company has in operation on the archipelago: seven on the island of Gran Canaria and one on the island of Fuerteventura.

Naturgy will construct a new renewables facility, the Puerto del Rosario Wind Farm, on the island of Fuerteventura, which will have an installed capacity of 29.2 MW. The company will invest €39.3 million in the project, which will consist of eight 3.65 MW wind turbines. This facility was included in the new wind-power auction of 217 MW held by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition in December, during which the company was awarded 184 MW. This means Naturgy has become the second contractor in terms of assigned power.

Ana Peris, Director of Power Generation at Naturgy, pointed out that “the result of this auction is a significant success for our company, which has obtained 16% of the total awarded power, the largest wind farm, placing it ahead of other utilities companies in the Spanish energy sector. This demonstrates the commitment to renewable power generation stated by Naturgy in its 2018-2022 strategic plan.”

The Puerto del Rosario Wind Farm is in addition to the eight wind farms the company currently has in operation in the archipelago: seven on the island of Gran Canaria and one on the island of Fuerteventura. These have a total power of 32.6 MW and almost €50 million have been invested in them.

The new project scheduled by Naturgy will now continue the process of obtaining all the remaining permits needed for construction in order for them to begin operating before 30 June 2022 – the deadline set by the Ministry in the regulations governing the auction.

Naturgy Renovables

The renewables subsidiary of the power company closed the first quarter of 2019 with an installed capacity in operation of 1,179 MW in Spain (1,012 MW from wind, 109 MW from mini-hydroelectric plants and 58 MW from cogeneration and photovoltaics).
