The Naturgy Foundation and the Roure Foundation renew their collaboration to double the vulnerable homes refurbished so far

  • By working together the two foundations will be able to do more than 20 homes, thanks to resources from the Energy Rehabilitation Solidarity Fund.

The Naturgy Foundation and the Roure Foundation have successfully refurbished 11 homes of vulnerable families in Barcelona, and have agreed to double that figure in the coming months. The refurbishment is carried out with the resources that the Naturgy Foundation’s Energy Rehabilitation Solidarity Fund puts at the disposal of social entities so they can improve the home energy efficiency of the most disadvantaged sectors of the population.

The two foundations have been working together to help families in vulnerable situations for more than a year. In the last six months they have concentrated their efforts on home energy refurbishment and this positive experience has led them to increase the resources so they can do more than twenty. Other actions carried out include repairing or purchasing heating systems, installing window closures and glazing, fixing and installing electricity and gas equipment, and improving wall insulation.

The Managing Director of the Naturgy Foundation, María Eugenia Coronado, highlighted the joint work done with the Roure Foundation and said that “the broad network of agreements established with various organisations in the third sector are enabling us to increase the number of people benefiting from our social projects every day”.

The Naturgy Foundation works with various authorities and social entities including Foment de l’Habitatge Social, Hábitat 3, Fundación para la Caridad de la Construcción de Cáritas, the Mambré and Tengo Hogar foundations and Accem, besides the Roure Foundation, providing them with resources from the Energy Efficiency Solidarity Fund.

The work carried out with this fund follows the guidelines of “Express Rehabilitation for Vulnerable Homes”, a study sponsored by the Naturgy Foundation. This publication promotes energy efficiency improvements in vulnerable homes, at low cost but with a big impact on people’s quality of life and on family energy bills. Express rehabilitation including seven measures, for example, increases the number of comfort days without consuming energy by 22% in a year and could mean annual savings of up to €650.

This agreement is in line with the 2019-2024 National Strategy to tackle Energy Poverty, which establishes the energy refurbishment of properties as one of the short-, medium- and long-term lines of action to address this problem structurally. It is also part of the Naturgy Energy Vulnerability Plan, the objectives of which include improving the quality of life of groups affected by energy poverty and advising them on matters relating to energy consumption or paying for energy services.

The Naturgy Foundation, set up by the energy company in 1992, is engaged in social action programmes both nationally and further afield, especially actions aimed at alleviating energy vulnerability. It also seeks to educate, train, inform and raise social awareness of energy and environmental issues.

The Roure Foundation has been working in Barcelona’s Sant Pere, Santa Caterina and La Ribera neighbourhoods (Ciutat Vella) since 1992. Their mission is to provide support for people in precarious situations so they can be as independent as possible and enjoy a decent and responsible life.
